[ARCHIVED] 507 Race Demolition Begins

507 Race

Partial demolition of 507 Race Street will begin today, May 31. The removal of the building is expected to require two phases. This first phase will remove the remaining front and side walls, down to a safe height, until public safety has been ensured. At this time, the 500 Block of Race Street will be reopened for traffic. Phase 2 will begin soon thereafter, and is expected to begin at the rear of the building to prevent further closure of public roadways. Debris will be removed from the rear of the building.

During Phase 1, the lintels and sills of the front windows will be preserved and relocated. These architectural features can possibly be reused in other historic preservation projects. As part of Phase 2, the City of Cambridge will explore the possibility of reclaiming historic material, such as bricks, which can be sold to possibly recover part of the demolition expense.

At this time, no further interruptions in traffic is expected beyond Phase 1.
