Dorchester County Emergency Services (DES) has announced that the Winter Storm Warning has been extended tonight to 6 p.m. by the National Weather Service. This means severe Winter weather will continue into the evening, and that blowing snow and reduced visibility will continue to create dangerous conditions.

Motorists are urged to stay off the road way. If you are required to travel, please keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle.

Because of no trash collection on Monday due to New Year’s holiday and the cancellation of trash collection on Thursday due to the unique circumstances surrounding storm Grayson, Chesapeake Waste will provide a special trash collection for those residents on Monday, January 8^th. Chesapeake Waste will expand its collection amount from one tote, to one tote as well as two extra trash cans or six household garbage bags.

Dorchester County remains under a Winter Storm Warning by the National Weather Service, which anticipates anywhere from one to three inches of snow over the next three hours. While snow fall across the county has been predictable, wind gusts exceeding 35 MPH have made road conditions dangerous across much of the county. Motorists are urged to stay home unless absolutely necessary, even if their local roadways are clear and navigable. 

Arterial roads maintained by city and county services are reported as being well maintained where buildings and other surroundings protect them from winds and drifting, while larger highways - while also being diligently maintained - are more susceptible to high winds and drifting. In some places, drifted snow has already turned to ice, which will continue to be an issue as long as windchill and temperature are conducive to ice and freezing conditions.

National Weather Service predictions remain the same as earlier updates, except that snowfall predictions have reached up to 12 inches in parts of Dorchester County closest to Wicomico County. However, this kind of accumulation appears to be unlikely.

Other useful updates:

• A State of Emergency has been declared for the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Dorchester Emergency Services (DES) considers it unlikely that the Mid-Shore, which includes Dorchester County, would be included in this, unless something unforeseen required DES to request state resources to maintain basic and essential services.
• High winds and snow are the focal point now, but the National Weather Service is reporting that westerly winds will create blowout tides, or low tides in excess of one foot of Mean Low Water (MLW). These blowout tides create potentially dangerous conditions for docked boats. The City Municipal Yacht Basin has taken precautions for this, and the marina at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay has been notified.
• Wind chill is expected to reach zero degrees in the evening and early morning hours.
