Residents Advised to Stay Safe at Home January 9, 2024
due to High Wind and Rain Advisories, Projected Coastal Flooding
Cambridge, MD (January 9, 2024). Residents of Cambridge and all visitors should plan to spend the evening safely inside on January 9th, avoiding any non-essential traveling.
Federal and state emergency management and weather organizations are forecasting high and sustained winds of between 45 and 50 miles per hour, with gusts topping as high as 70 miles per hour. This will be accompanied by between one to three inches of rain falling on an already saturated ground. Combined with high tides, this evening’s storm is projected to cause coastal flooding and localized flooding comparable to an October 2021 storm.
High tide between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. on January 10th, coupled with all the rain is projected to be the time of greatest flood risk.
The City of Cambridge closed Gerry Boyle Park at 3:30 p.m. Flooding is probable on Water Street, Hambrooks, Cedar Street, and other lower lying areas of the Cambridge community.
City of Cambridge police, volunteer rescue, public services, and development personnel are standing by ready to assist as needed. City crews performed an emergency exercise on this type of event less than one year ago.
In addition to flooding, high winds are projected to cause tree falls and other storm damage. Do not approach downed lines and do not drive through water covering a street. The best course of action is to stay inside and monitor weather conditions. Should it prove necessary, an emergency shelter will be opened by Dorchester County officials at Cambridge Dorchester South High School.
A previously scheduled Planning Commission meeting set for 6 p.m. has been cancelled.
