Charles Cornish was elected president of the Cambridge City Council on July 20, 1964, making him the first Black to hold that title in Cambridge and in the state of Maryland. According to an article in the New York Times, Mr. Cornish’s election came after the reorganization of the Council following a “bitterly contested municipal election” that pivoted heavily on race relations troubles.
At the time of his election to Council president, Mr. Cornish was the only Black and was a senior member of the Council, having served for 18 years.
Mr. Cornish was an active member of the Republican party and during his career was well-known and active statewide and on a national level, earning statewide and national appointments as well as serving on many city, county, and Eastern Shore boards and committees.
